Fat Transfer

As we age, facial fat loss results in sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, facial creases and lines, and thin lips. The face literally becomes 'deflated'. If you want to plump up sunken cheekbones, fill in stubborn facial lines, or create more supple lips, you may want to consider fat injections. Facial fat transfer allows us to sculpt and restore the face to its natural beauty. Age and exercise can produce fat atrophy in the face resulting in a sunken, drawn appearance. Facial fat transfer is capable of recreating the natural, healthy appearance of a youthful face, by restoring volume to it. Fat injections may be used to fill in hollow areas under the eyes and cheekbones, laugh lines (smile lines) and other facial creases. Fat can also be used to fill in scars and to plump the lips. There is no need for concern about a foreign substance in your body because the fat used in the injection is taken directly from another area of your own body. Fat is readily available, is a living tissue, will not be rejected, feels natural and can be replenished. Good candidates for fat transfer include men and women who are healthy and have realistic expectations regarding this excellent procedure.

Facial fat transfers can be used as a single procedure to treat the whole face or to target only certain desired areas. It can also be combined with other procedures; such as a facelift or blepharoplasty. Fat injection procedures are performed in an ambulatory surgery setting using local anesthesia and IV sedation (twilight anesthesia). Fat transfer is actually two procedures performed in a single session that lasts approximately 1 hour. First, the fat is harvested from a fattier area of the body; such as the abdomen, hips or buttocks, through a gentle suctioning technique. Using a very small cannula, the fat is then injected into the face. The fat does not move or shift as it becomes incorporated as living tissue; results are extremely long lasting, if not permanent. There are no dressings or drains to contend with.

There are few complications associated with fat transfer surgery. After the procedure, the face may appear puffy and swollen. This can potentially last several weeks. However, most patients may typically return to work and other normal activities immediately after the procedure. The result is a rejuvenated, natural look that can last for years.

Fat can also be used to fill in scars and to plump the lips. Dr. Light is one of the few cosmetic surgeons using fat transfer to rejuvenate the hands, with fabulous results.
