Men's Health

Men's Health

Men's health concerns are just as important as women's and need to be addressed with the same enthusiasm as women's health concerns. Men seem to have special needs also, and the Texas Institute of Functional Medicines is here to address those needs.

The number one "special need" is sexual dysfunction and the second being prostate problems. Please review each of the conditions and the testing that we use for each.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) can be corrected with many of TIFM's therapies, such as Heavy Metal Detox, Cardiovascular Disease, High Blood Pressure, Testosterone and Growth Hormone.

Heavy metal poisoning, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, a lack of testosterone, and growth hormone can all contribute to ED — and can be corrected. Why not get to the root of the problem rather than taking dangerous drugs such as Cialis and Viagra?

The most common side effects of Viagra include headaches, facial flushing, and indigestion. The FDA also noted that three percent of men taking the little blue pill reported temporary changes in their vision, including light sensitivity and a bluish tinge in their vision.

In early May, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, meeting in San Francisco, urged that the problem be taken more seriously. "FDA clinical trials show that taking the medication, especially at higher doses, can cause some retinal dysfunction, and affect the way we see for a number of hours", association spokesman Dr. Michael F. Marmor said in a statement.

Marmor, a professor of ophthalmology at Stanford University, said a clinical study showed that electrical measures of retinal function dropped by 30 to 50 percent and lasted for at least five hours after taking a large dose of Viagra.

Andropause: ("male menopause")

By the time men are between the ages of 40 and 55, they can experience a phenomenon similar to the female menopause, called Andropause. Unlike women, men do not have a clear-cut signpost such as the cessation of menstruation to mark this transition. Both, however, are distinguished by a drop in hormone levels. Estrogen in the female, testosterone in the male. The bodily changes occur very gradually in men and may be accompanied by changes in attitudes and moods, fatigue, a loss of energy, sex drive and physical agility.

What's more, studies show that this decline in testosterone can actually put one at risk for other health problems like heart disease and weak bones. Since all this happens at a time of life when many men begin to question their values, accomplishments and direction in life, it's often difficult to realize that the changes occurring are related to more than just external conditions.

A gradual hormonal decline.

Unlike menopause, which generally occurs in women during their mid-forties to mid-fifties, men's "transition" may be much more gradual and expand over many decades. Attitude, psychological stress, alcohol, injuries or surgery, medications, obesity and infections can contribute to its onset.

Although with age, a decline in testosterone levels will occur in virtually all men, there is no way of predicting who will experience Andropausal symptoms of sufficient severity to seek medical help. Neither is it predictable at what age symptoms will occur in a particular individual. Each man's symptoms may also be different.

Increased diagnostic capabilities. Some men find it difficult to admit that there's even a problem. Often physicians didn't always think of low-testosterone levels as a possible culprit. So these factors often led doctors to conclude that symptoms were related to other medical conditions (i.e. depression) or were simply related to aging and often encouraged their patients to accept that "they were no longer spring chickens". TIFM works with men in determining if low testosterone is the culprit. Our advanced testing methods are very accurate and our bio-identical testosterone can easily correct symptoms that result from low testosterone.

Many changes happened that need to be measured, such as 5-alpha reductase activity which metabolizes testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). The other enzyme that goes awry is aromatase which causes testosterone to shift into estrogen. Both of these imbalanced enzymes can be corrected and often no testosterone is needed or less is needed.

Men are now coming into the 21st Century and correcting their hormones and seeking cosmetic surgical corrections. Why not look and feel your best?
